1959 Giulietta Sprint

I will soon be in possession of a ’59 Giulietta Sprint. Within a certain context, this is one of my favorite cars of all time, ever, forever and always. Stories of its beginnings are hard to believe, with rushed design and manufacture, but the result is equally hard to ignore.

Of course, the one I’m about to own looks little like that. Or rather, it’s the same car with 50 years of use and abuse. And here it is:

Primer hiding the bad stuff

Primer hiding the worst of it, but warpy hood and nose are obvious in this pic. Some of this has already been addressed--hopefully a lot. Rockers are purportedly good but look not-so-good here. VERY cool wheels.

The cool part of this kind of project is that you can pretty much build the car to taste. Originality is out the window. Cosmetically speaking, the only change I’ll likely make is to paint it a different color. Generally speaking, and with just a few German exceptions, I’m not a fan of blue cars; this car was originally dark blue.

Mechanically, the car will come with about 80% of what’s needed for a 1300 Abnormale engine (1300 with dual sidedraft Webers in place of the standard single Solex downdraft). I might have the remaining 20% in my garage. It’s too early to say, but I’ll likely stick with this setup, since it’s close to original and still plenty fun. In the meantime, I get to learn a lot about welding.
